Prom Dress Inspiration from Katy Perry January 30, 2009

I was watching an exclusive performance and interview with Katy Perry on cosmogirl.com this week — it reminded me that Katy Perry is a perfect style icon for prom, especially if you favor shorter dresses.

Katy PerryOn MyPromStyle.com, I created a slideshow of Katy’s best dresses for you to browse for ideas. Don’t worry, I left out her crazy ice cream dress, owl eyes dress, and carousel dress — fab as they were on the red carpet, not so good for prom! My favorite dress is this one on the left, which she wore to an InTouch party. It reminds me of something Betsey Johnson, my favorite designer, would create.

What do you think of Katy’s exclusive online song “Brick by Brick”? Listen to it as you browse for dresses online in our Dress Finder!

Your Prom Night Horoscope January 26, 2009

Do you love reading your horoscope? If so, then you definitely have to check out your prom night destiny on MyPromStyle.com.Astro Prom

Even though I’m not hardcore into astrology — I’m still not entirely sure what being a Sagittarius means –  I was still curious to know what my sign predicted about my prom style. (Yes, I go to prom too! The Ultimate Prom in New York City, in fact, for our annual video series premiering again in March.)

My prom horoscope ended up sounding pretty true so far! It said my style was “sparkly” and the dress I think I’m going to wear to prom this June does have sequins on it. It said I have a spirited mood — I would agree!

Check out your prom horoscope here — does it ring true for you?

The Hottest Color of the Season January 21, 2009

Wondering what it is for Spring 2009, season of your prom? According to super serious research - yes, people actually study this at a center called the Pantone Color Institute! - the color is Palace Blue. Blues and purples will be hot in general, Pantone predicts, and we’ll also see vibrant greens, fuchsias, and yellows to complement them. Have you thought about a blue dress? It is a Cinderella classic, and you can make it fun for prom. Just search the dresses on MyPromStyle.com for ideas, like I did.

Palace Blue: fyi
It’s similar to cornflower blue, like this.

I’d go a shade brighter — the effect will be a little less bridesmaid, a little more prom queen. Search the Dress Finder on MyPromStyle.com for a full range, but here’s a steal and a splurge I found.

STEAL: $150, at JCPenney — found this one in our $150 and Less Prom Dresses flipbook!

SPLURGE: approx $300, by Aidan Mattox - found in MyPromStyle.com’s Dress Finder.

To accessorize with this color, try dramatic crystal chandelier earrings, silver shoes, and a pink clutch that pops — with pink lips to match, of course. (Try the CoverGirl Outlast Lipstain — it’s super easy to apply, like coloring your lips with a marker.) For a clutch, try this one from Forever 21 — a bargain at $12.50.

Have you narrowed your prom dress down to a color yet?

9 Prom Trends for Prom 2009 - From the Runway! January 16, 2009

I love when prom fashion has a good cause behind it. Have you heard of Ali’s Runway? It’s a huge prom fashion event featuring 300 models from Kansas City high schools. Their mission is to give their models a crash course in self-defense, before they strut down the runway in the latest Niki by Niki Livas and Zum Zum Prom dresses. It’s in the memory of Ali Kemp, whose life ended way too soon, but whose spirit lives on through defense training from the T.A.K.E. Foundation.

Since I’m based in NYC, I couldn’t attend. So I sent my stylish reporter — Rebecca Delaney, who goes to the University of Missouri — to scoop out 9 flirty prom trends for Prom 2009. Check out her finds below! - Tammy

9 Prom Fashion Tips for ‘09! by Rebecca Delaney

1. Hike up those hems: Feeling bold? For daring fashionistas, short dresses say “So what?” to more traditional looks, and they showcase your sassy side.
2. Go green: It seems like designers caught the eco-friendly bug. Greens in all shades — olive, apples and especially limes — should be hot hues for ’09. With a wide range of trendy shades, it shouldn’t be tough to find a color to match your skin tone.
3. Time to shine, literally: Nothing feels better than knowing all eyes are on you at your prom. Metallic and iridescent taffetas are sure to get you double-takes galore.
4. Bow me over: Soft bows at the waist give gowns a feminine punch that’ll make you look like a princess.
5. Texture: Look for ruching, pleating and gathering on gowns both full and short. The extra texture gives a regal vibe that’d make even Marie Antoinette jealous.Alfred Angelo Print Prom Dress
6. Beads, beads, beads: Dresses with beadwork — be it simple or ornate — are perfect for girls who know it’s all about the details. Member of the prom court? Here’s a little secret: Beaded dresses are especially eye-catching under stage lights.
7. Print-cess: Sport a sleek, slim-cut dress with a bright, adventurous print. Look for large floral patterns, paisleys and animal prints. This look isn’t for the timid.
8. Always a classic: The timeless ball gown will never go out of style. For a fusion of old-school class and contemporary cuteness, look for gowns in in-your-face shades like brilliant blues and bright yellows .
This is one confident prom girl!9. CONFIDENCE: Your best accessory is an attitude that says “I look freaking incredible!” Remember, prom’s a chance to feel like you’re the hottest girl on the planet. Embrace it, like this model did, and it won’t matter what you wear. Empowerment is always trendy.

P.S. You can watch video from the runway and defense training– see below!
