Dress Like Bella from Twilight at Prom

Twilight prom pictureAre you a die-hard Twilight fan, so much that you’re thinking of copying Bella Swan’s prom look? In that case, you’d be looking for a knee-length blue dress…but let’s forget the beige sweater cover-up like she wore…(See here!) Though it must be cold in Forks, Washington, it’s not quite glam enough for prom.

If you’re going for a splurge, you might like the flirty tiered dress by Mikael Aghal, $498 on edressme.com (#1). But if you’re like Bella, who works hard for the money at Newton’s sports shop, then you might want to try the steals from David’s Bridal (#2 and #3).

1. Mikael Aghal dress

2. David’s Bridal, style 018911, $149

3. David’s Bridal, style 98602305, $99

So, what do you think? Will you be copying Bella at prom this year? (or does your date look anything like Edward Cullen?!)

The Oscar 2009 Trend: Mermaid Dresses

When watching the red carpet arrivals at the Academy Awards last night, did you notice how many stars chose mermaid-silhouetted gowns? These are the dresses that are very fitting and then flare out at the bottom, giving you that beautiful hourglass shape.

I think mermaid-style dresses are so stunning and sophisticated. They have that blast-to-the-past vibe…reminds me of soulful songstresses like The Supremes singing into those old-fashioned silver microphones. Take a look at the ladies who mastered the elegance of the mermaid gown Sunday night:

But is the mermaid style practical for prom? Honestly, I don’t recommend it…so hard to dance in! For this reason, I’m giving Miley Cyrus my Best Dressed award. She rode the aquatic-inspired trend with her choice of a silver Zuhair Murad ball gown that had glittery scales. Except, this dress weighed her down a ton! For prom, if you want to stand out, they key is looking for pretty embellishments and a silhouette that will keep you comfortable all night long.

For ideas, check out the Dress Finder and search by “silhouette.” Let me know if you find a dress you fall in love with!

Excited for the Oscars on Sunday?

I can’t wait to see what the stars will be wearing on the red carpet! Do you have any predictions on who will be best dressed? My bets are on Anne Hathaway! She is nominated for Best Actress for her role in Rachel Getting Married, and her navy blue Armani Prive gown at the Golden Globes was such a winner.

I’m also curious to see what Freida Pinto will be wearing — she’s the beautiful Indian actress who made her debut as the female lead in Slumdog Millionaire, the little film that was a surprise hit (it’s up for Best Picture!) Freida Pinto, Slumdog MillionaireHere’s the dress she wore to the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which I loved for two reasons:

1. THE COLOR: Do you know this shade of blue is officially the hot color of Spring 2009? On CosmoGirl.com, I blogged about the research that proves it! (There’s actually a color institute that studies the trends, and they’re all for Palace Blue this season.)

2.THE BACK TRAIN: Dresses that have something unexpected in the back, like this train that begins from the back of the halter neckline, always feel more unique to me. MyPromStyle.com has a whole slide show of dresses that have interesting backs. Some are decorative, others a bit revealing!

p.s. I have little doubt about who the Best Dressed guy will be: Rob Pattinson! Did you hear that he is presenting an award? Seventeen shares the buzz!

How to Book Your Prom Limo

Now’s the perfect time to starting thinking about your ride to prom. Not sure where to begin? We called Alex Darbahani, the president & CEO of KLS — one of the leading limo services — to find out exactly what you need to know.

Q: Before a girl calls you to book her prom limo, what should she have already thought about or decided?

She needs to know the exact date, how many hours she will need the limo, the exact number of people that are going to ride with her. A big group is always better because you pay less [per person] for the limo rental.

Q: What’s the most requested limo for prom, from your company? And how much it cost to rent it per hour? How many passengers can fit inside?

The most requested limos are the H2 Hummer and the Escalade Stretch, and both of them can have 16 to 20 passengers. If you want to rent one of them, it can cost you up to $1,350 for six hours. The party bus has a great request too.

Q: How many months before prom should you book the limo? Can you book it if you’re under 18?

You should book your limo 50 or 30 days before your prom so you can negotiate the price to rent it and have a bigger chance to get the limo you wish. And yes, you can book it yourself if you are under 18! But, one of your parents has to be present at the moment the limo picks you up to sign a contract.

Q: How are you paid? Is there a down-payment? Do you have any tips for how to collect money from friends — so the one booking the limo doesn’t get stuck footing the whole bill?

The company requires a down payment of 20% of the total cost. A really good tip is to collect the money by couple, not per person, because sometimes a guy will pay for him and his date.

Q: What is the company’s cancellation policy?

You can always cancel, but the 20% down payment is non refundable.

Q: What is the average cost for renting a limo for prom?

It can vary depending on the limo you request, but the prices go from $1,100 to $1,350. Keep in mind that some companies may rent their limos for a minimum of six hours, while others rent them for eight hours minimum.

Q: Do the prices include the gratuity for the chauffer? How much should you tip?

No, they don’t. You should tip him 15-20% of the total cost.

Q: Do you have any prom packages or special discounts for prom? If so what do they include?

Our prom package costs $1,200 for six hours and includes snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. However, you can always negotiate the price with the limo company depending on what limo you request.

Q: Do limos take you to your post-prom destination also? Is it better to rent them for the whole night, or by the hour?

Yes, they can take you, but remember in some states like California, it’s against the law for a minor to be out after 10 pm [even where this curfew exists, there are some exceptions, so check with your municipality], so make sure your after party is indoors. We rent the limos per hour, so make you sure to know how many hours you are going to need the limo when you book it.

Q: What safety issues are important to know?

Do not drink alcoholic drinks that night; you don’t want to be in trouble. When you book your limo, make sure that the company is registered and has proper insurance. Always have thread and needle with you, you never know what might happen to your dress. And the most important tip is having fun!

Black Dresses Rock the Grammys

At the Grammy’s last night, the winning look was definitely black dresses (an interesting shift from the muted pales on the Golden Globes carpet in January). Your favorite songstresses were wearing glam black gowns, in print and solid styles: Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, Jordin Sparks, Fantastia, Keyshia Cole, Jennifer Nettles.

Which style do you like better — solid black, like Miley and Taylor wore, or printed black, like Jordin Sparks and Fantastia wore?

Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus

Jordin Sparks and Fantastia

Whichever your pick, take away these tips from our 2009 Grammy fashion icons:

1. If wearing solid black, dazzle with sparkly earrings. If going with prints, pick a statement cocktail ring, rather than go overboard with big earrings or necklaces.

2. If you’re inspired to wear black to prom, filter the dresses in MyPromStyle.com’s Dress Finder by color — easy!
