9 Prom Trends for Prom 2009 - From the Runway! January 16, 2009
I love when prom fashion has a good cause behind it. Have you heard of Ali’s Runway? It’s a huge prom fashion event featuring 300 models from Kansas City high schools. Their mission is to give their models a crash course in self-defense, before they strut down the runway in the latest Niki by Niki Livas and Zum Zum Prom dresses. It’s in the memory of Ali Kemp, whose life ended way too soon, but whose spirit lives on through defense training from the T.A.K.E. Foundation.
Since I’m based in NYC, I couldn’t attend. So I sent my stylish reporter — Rebecca Delaney, who goes to the University of Missouri — to scoop out 9 flirty prom trends for Prom 2009. Check out her finds below! - Tammy
9 Prom Fashion Tips for ‘09! by Rebecca Delaney
1. Hike up those hems: Feeling bold? For daring fashionistas, short dresses say “So what?” to more traditional looks, and they showcase your sassy side.
2. Go green: It seems like designers caught the eco-friendly bug. Greens in all shades — olive, apples and especially limes — should be hot hues for ’09. With a wide range of trendy shades, it shouldn’t be tough to find a color to match your skin tone.
3. Time to shine, literally: Nothing feels better than knowing all eyes are on you at your prom. Metallic and iridescent taffetas are sure to get you double-takes galore.
4. Bow me over: Soft bows at the waist give gowns a feminine punch that’ll make you look like a princess.
5. Texture: Look for ruching, pleating and gathering on gowns both full and short. The extra texture gives a regal vibe that’d make even Marie Antoinette jealous.
6. Beads, beads, beads: Dresses with beadwork — be it simple or ornate — are perfect for girls who know it’s all about the details. Member of the prom court? Here’s a little secret: Beaded dresses are especially eye-catching under stage lights.
7. Print-cess: Sport a sleek, slim-cut dress with a bright, adventurous print. Look for large floral patterns, paisleys and animal prints. This look isn’t for the timid.
8. Always a classic: The timeless ball gown will never go out of style. For a fusion of old-school class and contemporary cuteness, look for gowns in in-your-face shades like brilliant blues and bright yellows .
9. CONFIDENCE: Your best accessory is an attitude that says “I look freaking incredible!” Remember, prom’s a chance to feel like you’re the hottest girl on the planet. Embrace it, like this model did, and it won’t matter what you wear. Empowerment is always trendy.
