Dakota Fanning Wears Recycled Dress to Prom! April 30, 2009
Dress recycling is getting more popular! The latest celeb to send the message that it’s cool to wear the same dress twice is actress Dakota Fanning, who got a break from the New Moon set (she’s playing Jane in the Twilight sequel) to attend her junior prom.
Dakota, who could buy any dress she wanted for prom, ended up choosing this pink taffeta silk, bubble-hemmed dress, which she wore at the world premiere of Coraline in February. Check out the pre-prom photo we spotted!
Finally, a former child star whose personal pictures leaked on the Internet send a positive message, rather than a scandalous one. Dakota reminds us that if a dress looks awesome on you, why only be photographed in it once? And it’s refreshing to see she even got to experience prom — so many young celebrities miss out on that.
Don’t forget, when you’re done wearing your dress, you can always give it a new life to a girl in need, through DonateMyDress.org. Visit the site to look up the nearest dress drop-off location or places where you can mail your dress to a prom-goer who can’t afford one.
Are you thinking of wearing an already-worn dress to prom?

Earth Day falls smack in the middle of prom season, so it makes perfect sense that a group of teens would team up with Whole Foods to create the Project Green Prom campaign.
This April at the Whole Foods in Tribeca, New York City, we had a front-row seat at an eco-friendly prom fashion show, hosted by the organization Teens Turning Green, which created the green prom campaign. We spotted lots of awesome vintage frocks and dresses made with eco-fabrics — like organic cotton and vegan-friendly taffeta — and recycled fabrics.
One of the most popular pieces was this Nicole Miller Eco-Couture dress which was made from recycled gold and ivory jacquard fabric. You might recognize the model from the April issue of Seventeen — it’s Erin Schrode, the 17-year-old featured in a going green story for championing safe cosmetics.
Not sure what the first step should be toward greening your prom? Here are three!
If you haven’t worked up the nerve to ask your crush to the prom, this comedian is going to help you out
Josh Shipp, from heyjosh.com, recorded this video that you can send to your dream date. It’ll tell him you’re interested, while giving him a good laugh. And if he says no, you can act like you weren’t seriously asking him, but sent it as a joke. So it’s a win-win solution to your no-date dilemma…thanks, Josh!

Carrie Underwood: Best Dressed at the CMAs? April 6, 2009
Carrie Underwood didn’t just take home the Country Music Awards’ highest honor — she made a fashion statement while doing it! This former American Idol wore 5 dresses throughout the evening! Which was your favorite?
On the red carpet, Carrie wore a Randi Rahm blush pink gown. Totally a dream prom dress — look at the elegant one-shoulder that gives off Greek goddess vibes! Bonus points for being flowy and comfortable.
Next, she changed into a one-sleeved white Jean Fares Couture minidress for her performance with Taylor Swift and Sugarland. Backstage, she wore a one-shouldered black dress (are you starting to see a theme here?) P.S. Who knew the stars had dresses picked out just for backstage — I’d be in sweats during my off-hours!
For her solo, she wore a maroon Rafael Cennamo gown, with a billowy train that swept the stage. NOT recommended for prom, but it reminds me of the beautiful gowns I see girls wear for their quinceanera on misquincemag.com. So it’s a DO for fancy award show performances and Sweet 15s!
Finally, when Carrie accepted her awards, she wore a tiered white Roberto Cavalli minidress, also flowy and feminine.
If Carrie teaches us anything about prom fashion, let it be that your dress should not only look pretty but also feel great.
Case in point: How comfortable does this mermaid dress look on Kellie Pickler?
Yeah, not so much…even though Kellie said she loved her golden Zuhair Murad gown (and it is stunning), is she breathing in it? I’ll pass on a tight silhouette for prom — too hard to dance in!
When It Comes to Prom Hair, Be Fat-Tastic! April 1, 2009
Yes, you heard right: “fat-tastic” hair is what’s hot for prom this year! Of course, what we mean to say is bigger, thicker, voluminous hair, but at the event I went to last night for got2b’s new line of styling products, “fat-tastic” was the buzzword!
At Dylan’s Candy Bar, the New York City candy shop (started by Ralph Lauren’s daughter!), got2be launched their new fat-tastic thickening plumping mousee and hairspray in a room full of umm…fattening (but delicious!) treats: giant cupcakes, fudgy brownies, oozing cannolis, and loads of candy. The idea is that these new products are as indulgent as the desserts you love, except cheaper (they cost $5.99 each) and calorie-free.
What makes this mousse and spray different and “fattening” to your hair? The formula has a collagen-infused ingredient — collagen is the stuff used in some limp glosses and some mascaras for a “plumping” effect, because it makes hairs and body tissues stretch a little more.
For a fuller prom ‘do, flip your head upside down and rub the mousse in from the roots to the tips of your damp hair. Blowdry (with hair still flipped over) to keep the shape and fullness of your hair. For extra hold, flip your hair over and use hairspray at the roots too. For an updo that you want to stay in place all night long, spray light coats of the hairspray over spots where you need extra hold.
What’s your hair like — have you been struggling with limp locks lately?
As web intern here, part of my job is sharing my real-life prom traumarama with you. But don’t worry, my prom date disaster actually turned out to be the one of the best nights of my life! I bet most of you are already thinking what guy you want to be your date for prom, because if you wait until the last minute you might find out he’s already taken, right? But what happens if he says yes early on, and then dismisses you a day before prom?
Yep, that’s my story! I was excited for prom not only because I loved my long, emerald green dress that took me two months to find, but also because I was finally able to introduce my boyfriend to all my friends. I asked him to be my date two months before prom and he said yes! Everything was going perfectly until a week before prom. We got into a small argument and the night before the dance, he texted me saying he wasn’t coming. The next day, I woke up sort of angry and sad, but I didn’t let that incident ruin my night. I decided to go by myself and have fun with all my friends.
On prom day, my mom sent me to buy something from the grocery store around the corner. On my way there, I met up with a guy friend of mine who I first met when I was eight years old and I told him my situation . He told me not to feel bad and that he would pick me up from my house at 7 p.m. I was so amazed by his response, because I didn’t even ask him to come with me. W hen I told him he didn’t have to be my date, he simply said, “that’s what friends are for.” We had a wonderful time and danced until we couldn’t anymore, and at the end of the night I was so glad that I went with him and not with my first choice.
I shared my prom gossip — now it’s your turn! Do you already know who you’re taking to prom?
