Dyeable Shoes Making a Designer Comeback! March 24, 2009
Lela Rose, known for her feminine ready-to-wear collections and elegant wedding and bridesmaid dress line (she designed the bridesmaid dresses in former First Daughter Jenna Bush’s wedding!), has a new shoe collection at Payless ShoeSource that can complete your prom outfit. (Keep reading, because I’m going to tell you how to score a pair for free!)
At Payless, Lela’s Unforgettable Moments is a collection of satin shoes that you can dye in 64 custom colors — for just $50. Although strappy, metallic shoes have always been a mainstay for prom, these satin shoes are an affordable option to add more color or elegance to your look. If you’re wearing a black gown, you could dye your pumps red, for a stand-out effect. Or, say you were wearing a champagne-colored gown — you could dye your shoes to match them, for a subtle effect of elegance. You can make your jewelry a bit bolder: wear huge, sparkly chandelier earrings and they won’t be competing for attention with your shoes.
What I like best about the Unforgettable Moments shoes are that they have leather soles for durability, and certain styles have a strap around the ankle - SO important when you are on the dance floor.
But don’t just take my advice! I figured you’d want to hear from the true star, Lela Rose (pictured), so I asked her for her prom do’s and don’ts.
LELA ROSE’S PROM ADVICE: “Just don’t pretend you are a princess and wear a tiara! Dress age appropriately and consider buying vintage. Have fun with what you wear because you will definitely look back in 10 years and wonder what you were thinking!”
So, want to get your own pair of Unforgettable Moments shoes for free? Enter our giveaway here!
You can own dresses worn by Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Ashley Greene, and other stylish celebs! They’re putting their dresses up for auction to support DonateMyDress.org, the network that helps girls who can’t afford prom dresses get them.
Go to charityfolks.com/donatemydress to see what’s up for bids. Some dresses were even worn on the prom/dance episodes of Kyle XY and Greek! There are cute Betsey Johnson dresses starting at a fraction of the price of a new one. Place your bids early — the auction is up till March 27th. Good luck!
Ashley Greene Kicks Off the DonateMyDress.org Campaign in Style March 15, 2009
The Twilight star teamed up with DonateMyDress.org yesterday to kick off a month-long campaign to collect prom dresses for girls in need at Saks Fifth Avenue stores nationwide! For three hours, she greeted fans who brought a dress to donate and Twilight books and posters for her to autograph.
Ashley was just like her character Alice Cullen in Twilight: cheerful, graceful, eager to help get girls like Bella pretty for prom, and absolutely gorgeous! If you want to copy her style for prom, here’s how to get her look:
HER DRESS: Ashley wore a long, flowy, goddess-y alice + olivia dress, which she later donated to the cause — it will be auctioned off on charityfolks.com/donatemydress! In the goddess dress flipbook on MyPromStyle.com, you can find prom dresses that are similar (why not give your strapless maxi dress a colorful twist with an ombre color pattern - see this dress. Ombre is definitely a trend you see in other alice + olivia dresses!).
HER MAKEUP: Chee Lee, a makeup artist from the Giorgio Armani Beauty counter at Saks, gave Ashley a natural bronzed look to match the earth tones of her dress. Armani makeup is a bit pricey, so I asked her what’s worth the splurge. She said the Luminious Silk Foundation ($58) is a must-have because it has yellow undertones, is lightweight, and blends perfectly. You can then rely on drugstore brands for eye shadow, mascara, liner, etc. she says.
For her natural look, Chee used Maestro a rose shade of lipstick (#14), topped with lip shimmer, eye shadows that were sparkling sand and brown colored, black eye liner and false lashes. Chee definitely recommends using false lashes for prom. “It makes all the difference!” she said. Don’t worry, they won’t fall out, because Chee says the adhesive glue is very strong. Plus they make black-colored glue, so you can’t see it. Practice it out before the prom — watch the how-to video here.
* Don’t forget that if you haven’t donated a dress yet, you can do so at any Saks Fifth Ave store near you for the next two Saturdays in March — and get a 20% coupon off a new dress when you do!
Do you love reading your horoscope? If so, then you definitely have to check out your prom night destiny on MyPromStyle.com.
Honestly, I’m not hardcore into astrology — I don’t really know what being Sagittarius means to this day, but I was still curious to know what my sign predicted about my prom style. (Yes, I go to prom too! The Ultimate Prom in New York City, in fact, for our annual video series premiering again next week!)
My prom horoscope ended up sounding pretty true so far! It said my style was “sparkly” and the dress I think I’m going to wear to prom this June does have sequins on it. It said I have a spirited mood — I would agree!

Customize Your Prom Dress Online - and Win It Free! March 11, 2009
Is your worst nightmare showing up to prom in the same dress as another girl? Sure, anyone can personalize a store-bought dress with a killer pair of heels, funky jewelry, and a pretty hairstyle, but if you are looking for even more customization, we’ve got the scoop!
I recently discovered CocoMyles.com, an award-winning Website that lets you customize your own evening dress online. You pick the neckline, skirt hemline, fabric, color, and beading you want, and you can also order matching shawls and scarves. If you prefer, choose a dress style inspired by a famous actress, and then select your own color. The best part is, you can do it all for less than $200!
It takes five weeks for your dress to be made and shipped to you. If within 48 hours of receiving it, you decide you don’t like it, you can return it (the only bummer is you’ll have to cover the shipping cost and a $25 fee.)
We’ll help you try your hand at being a dress designer for free! Enter our sweepstakes here, and you can win the chance for you and your best friend to design your own prom dresses.
What would your dress look like? I love the “Pretty Betty” style inspired by America Ferrera, but instead of choosing blue like she did on the red carpet of the 2007 Emmys, I’d go eggplant. Or maybe charcoal, and pair it with hot red heels. Or maybe stick to my signature pink…decisions, decisions!
Donate a Dress, Just Like Twilight Star Ashley Greene, at Saks Fifth Ave! March 9, 2009
DonateMyDress.org is teaming up with Saks Fifth Ave to collect prom dresses in their stores nationwide, starting this Saturday! All dresses will be donated to community organizations in the DMD network that help prom-goers in need. Besides knowing you’ve helped another girl go to prom looking fabulous, there’s also 20% off a new dress in it for you!
If you live near New York City and are obsessed with Twilight, don’t miss this!! Ashley Greene, who plays Alice Cullen, will be on hand at the flagship store in Manhattan to offer prom style tips and share her own prom memories. It’s March 14th from 1pm-4pm on the 4th floor.
Ashley’s own prom dress didn’t quite meet the approval of her parents — read about it here — but she adored it, so you might want to ask her for advice if you’re in a similar boat. Granted, if you bring mom along and she ends up helping you pay for your new dress…well, it wouldn’t hurt to compromise on a style you both love.
Brenda Song, from the Suite Life on Deck, shared her crazy prom story with us when she visited our office this morning. As a working actress, she had to cancel on going to prom a couple times — but third time around, she made it happen! It just took a bit of prom dress shopping craziness…but I’ll let her tell you all about that. Watch below!
Are you and your student council thinking of ways to green the prom this year? Lots of schools are, so you should too! Here are ways you can jump on the wagon:
DRESS DONATION / SWAPPING
I just read an article about Huntsville High School in Alabama, where senior Morgan Hopper organized the Senior Chick Dress Swap — girls brought dresses they had already worn once and swapped them for a new one. This is a great way to go if you’re on a tight budget and not super picky about the style you want.
Even if you decide to buy a brand-new prom dress (Jovani, NightMoves, Niki Livas are some of my favorite labels, btw, which you can find in the MyPromStyle.com Dress Finder), you can still go green by:
1) Carpooling with friends when you go dress shopping. It’s more fun to shop together anyways!
2) Donating gently worn dresses to girls in need via the DonateMyDress.org network. Find locations in your area by searching here. Recycling and charity rolled into one!
FOOD AT PROM
If you’re on the planning committee, look for a catering company that specializes in locally grown food. Avoid using disposable plates, flatware, paper napkins or dishes at pre- or post-prom parties.
BEAUTY
Try some organic beauty products. Seventeen picked out their favorites here!
TRANSPORTATION
Hummers and stretch limos use up much more fuel per person than a 30-passanger bus would. Consider pulling a bigger group of friends together and renting one of these!
You can get more go-green ideas from page 385 of SeventeenPROM — on newsstands now! I’d also love to hear YOUR ideas for a green prom — leave them below!
Win free beauty stuff AND a pre-prom party for 50 friends! March 2, 2009
We all want clear skin every day, but especially on prom night…so it’s best to start a healthy skin regimen now if you don’t already have one. MyPromStyle.com has some basic tips here for clearing blackheads, reducing redness, and smoothing dry skin. Check it out! Cleansers and moisturizers are vital for pretty skin, and if you need to replenish your stash, then you should definitely enter this new sweepstakes that is running March 2nd-April 27th. Each week, you and a best friend have a shot at winning a prom prep beauty package worth $500!!
And if you’re realllly lucky, maybe you’ll win the grand prize, which is a 90210-style Pre Prom Party hosted by Clean & Clear and Seventeen for you and 50 of your friends! Get ready to be the most popular girl in school when you win that one…it inclues a professional photographer, makeover for you and a best friend, food and drink for all guests, a limo ride to prom, and a year’s supply of Clean & Clear products.
Dress Like Bella from Twilight at Prom February 25, 2009
Are you a die-hard Twilight fan, so much that you’re thinking of copying Bella Swan’s prom look? In that case, you’d be looking for a knee-length blue dress…but let’s forget the beige sweater cover-up like she wore…(See here!) Though it must be cold in Forks, Washington, it’s not quite glam enough for prom.
If you’re going for a splurge, you might like the flirty tiered dress by Mikael Aghal, $498 on edressme.com (#1). But if you’re like Bella, who works hard for the money at Newton’s sports shop, then you might want to try the steals from David’s Bridal (#2 and #3).
1. Mikael Aghal dress
2. David’s Bridal, style 018911, $149
3. David’s Bridal, style 98602305, $99
So, what do you think? Will you be copying Bella at prom this year? (or does your date look anything like Edward Cullen?!)
