Lela Rose, known for her feminine ready-to-wear collections and elegant wedding and bridesmaid dress line (she designed the bridesmaid dresses in former First Daughter Jenna Bush’s wedding!), has a new shoe collection at Payless ShoeSource that can complete your prom outfit. (Keep reading, because I’m going to tell you how to score a pair for free!)
At Payless, Lela’s Unforgettable Moments is a collection of satin shoes that you can dye in 64 custom colors — for just $50. Although strappy, metallic shoes have always been a mainstay for prom, these satin shoes are an affordable option to add more color or elegance to your look. If you’re wearing a black gown, you could dye your pumps red, for a stand-out effect. Or, say you were wearing a champagne-colored gown — you could dye your shoes to match them, for a subtle effect of elegance. You can make your jewelry a bit bolder: wear huge, sparkly chandelier earrings and they won’t be competing for attention with your shoes.
What I like best about the Unforgettable Moments shoes are that they have leather soles for durability, and certain styles have a strap around the ankle - SO important when you are on the dance floor.
But don’t just take my advice! I figured you’d want to hear from the true star, Lela Rose (pictured), so I asked her for her prom do’s and don’ts.
LELA ROSE’S PROM ADVICE: “Just don’t pretend you are a princess and wear a tiara! Dress age appropriately and consider buying vintage. Have fun with what you wear because you will definitely look back in 10 years and wonder what you were thinking!”

You can own dresses worn by Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Ashley Greene, and other stylish celebs! They’re putting their dresses up for auction to support DonateMyDress.org, the network that helps girls who can’t afford prom dresses get them.
Go to charityfolks.com/donatemydress to see what’s up for bids. Some dresses were even worn on the prom/dance episodes of Kyle XY and Greek! There are cute Betsey Johnson dresses starting at a fraction of the price of a new one. Place your bids early — the auction is up till March 27th. Good luck!
The Twilight star teamed up with DonateMyDress.org yesterday to kick off a month-long campaign to collect prom dresses for girls in need at Saks Fifth Avenue stores nationwide! For three hours, she greeted fans who brought a dress to donate and Twilight books and posters for her to autograph.
Ashley was just like her character Alice Cullen in Twilight: cheerful, graceful, eager to help get girls like Bella pretty for prom, and absolutely gorgeous! If you want to copy her style for prom, here’s how to get her look:
HER DRESS: Ashley wore a long, flowy, goddess-y alice + olivia dress, which she later donated to the cause — it will be auctioned off on charityfolks.com/donatemydress! In the goddess dress flipbook on MyPromStyle.com, you can find prom dresses that are similar (why not give your strapless maxi dress a colorful twist with an ombre color pattern - see this dress. Ombre is definitely a trend you see in other alice + olivia dresses!).
HER MAKEUP: Chee Lee, a makeup artist from the Giorgio Armani Beauty counter at Saks, gave Ashley a natural bronzed look to match the earth tones of her dress. Armani makeup is a bit pricey, so I asked her what’s worth the splurge. She said the Luminious Silk Foundation ($58) is a must-have because it has yellow undertones, is lightweight, and blends perfectly. You can then rely on drugstore brands for eye shadow, mascara, liner, etc. she says.
For her natural look, Chee used Maestro a rose shade of lipstick (#14), topped with lip shimmer, eye shadows that were sparkling sand and brown colored, black eye liner and false lashes. Chee definitely recommends using false lashes for prom. “It makes all the difference!” she said. Don’t worry, they won’t fall out, because Chee says the adhesive glue is very strong. Plus they make black-colored glue, so you can’t see it. Practice it out before the prom — watch the how-to video here.
* Don’t forget that if you haven’t donated a dress yet, you can do so at any Saks Fifth Ave store near you for the next two Saturdays in March — and get a 20% coupon off a new dress when you do!
* And if you want to host your own prom dress drive for girls in your community, it’s not too late. Read my how-to-get-started guide here!
Do you love reading your horoscope? If so, then you definitely have to check out your prom night destiny on MyPromStyle.com.![]()
Honestly, I’m not hardcore into astrology — I don’t really know what being Sagittarius means to this day, but I was still curious to know what my sign predicted about my prom style. (Yes, I go to prom too! The Ultimate Prom in New York City, in fact, for our annual video series premiering again next week!)
My prom horoscope ended up sounding pretty true so far! It said my style was “sparkly” and the dress I think I’m going to wear to prom this June does have sequins on it. It said I have a spirited mood — I would agree!
Check out your prom horoscope here — does it ring true for you?
Is your worst nightmare showing up to prom in the same dress as another girl? Sure, anyone can personalize a store-bought dress with a killer pair of heels, funky jewelry, and a pretty hairstyle, but if you are looking for even more customization, we’ve got the scoop!
I recently discovered CocoMyles.com, an award-winning Website that lets you customize your own evening dress online. You pick the neckline, skirt hemline, fabric, color, and beading you want, and you can also order matching shawls and scarves. If you prefer, choose a dress style inspired by a famous actress, and then select your own color. The best part is, you can do it all for less than $200!
It takes five weeks for your dress to be made and shipped to you. If within 48 hours of receiving it, you decide you don’t like it, you can return it (the only bummer is you’ll have to cover the shipping cost and a $25 fee.)
We’ll help you try your hand at being a dress designer for free! Enter our sweepstakes here, and you can win the chance for you and your best friend to design your own prom dresses.
What would your dress look like? I love the “Pretty Betty” style inspired by America Ferrera, but instead of choosing blue like she did on the red carpet of the 2007 Emmys, I’d go eggplant. Or maybe charcoal, and pair it with hot red heels. Or maybe stick to my signature pink…decisions, decisions!
DonateMyDress.org is teaming up with Saks Fifth Ave to collect prom dresses in their stores nationwide, starting this Saturday! All dresses will be donated to community organizations in the DMD network that help prom-goers in need. Besides knowing you’ve helped another girl go to prom looking fabulous, there’s also 20% off a new dress in it for you!
If you live near New York City and are obsessed with Twilight, don’t miss this!! Ashley Greene, who plays Alice Cullen, will be on hand at the flagship store in Manhattan to offer prom style tips and share her own prom memories. It’s March 14th from 1pm-4pm on the 4th floor.
Ashley’s own prom dress didn’t quite meet the approval of her parents — read about it here — but she adored it, so you might want to ask her for advice if you’re in a similar boat. Granted, if you bring mom along and she ends up helping you pay for your new dress…well, it wouldn’t hurt to compromise on a style you both love. ![]()
